No matter where you go in Ireland, you are likely to find a castle and Sligo is no exception. Today I invite you to visit Markree castle located in Collooney, just 15 minutes drive from Sligo Park Hotel, on the route of the famous Wild Atlantic Way.
This romantic castle was built in the 17th century and it is one of the largest privately owned castles in Ireland. Originally built as a guarding fort, the castle was acquired by the Cooper family, the biggest Irish landlords of this time, who transformed it into a manor house.
⠀
In 1830 Edward Joshua Cooper established an observatory on the castle grounds. Its telescope was the largest in the world for several years. In 1848 asteroid Metis was discovered there, the first and only asteroid discovered in Ireland up until 2008. The building of the old observatory still exists in the castle’s grounds, but it’s not operating anymore. The telescope was removed from there in the 20th century.
The castle is also famous for its place in Irish weather history. The lowest temperature in Irish history was recorded here on the 16th of January 1881: freezing minus 19 degrees.
⠀
In the early 20th century during the Irish Civil War the castle suffered significant damage and remained largely unused up to 1947. In 1980 Charles Cooper and his wife Mary remade the castle into a hotel, which was opened in October 1990. After changing ownership, the castle underwent further restoration and was reopened in 2017, welcoming guests once again to its historic surroundings.
Today Markree castle is a private hire venue, but you still can discover its charm and enjoy its unique atmosphere, beautiful garden and afternoon tea. On selected dates throughout the year, the castle opens its doors to the public, offering a chance to explore this remarkable historic estate.
Like any proper Irish castle, Markree has its own resident ghost: playful spirit Pippa, who sometimes locks doors or carries out other harmless pranks. Whether it is true or not, her presence adds an additional touch of mystery in the enchanting castle atmosphere.
