Just 20 minutes drive from Sligo Park Hotel will bring you to this wonderful place. Aughris Head is not that popular yet, but it’s exactly what makes it even more attractive.
When I was driving there for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by its beauty. Aughris Head offers you a scenic coastal walk that takes around 45 minutes to complete without much effort as it is flat and easy. Along the way you will enjoy the views of Knocknarea mountain from the Aughries Pier as well as stunning cliffs and wild Atlantic ocean. What surprised me most, however, was a small beach with black sand. The first ever black sand beach I’ve ever seen in Ireland. Also, I met the cutest Lost & Found box on my way.
This is an amazing place to slow down, unwind, and reconnect with yourself. Sitting on top of the cliff, breathing in fresh ocean breeze, enjoying calmness and the surrounding landscape, you will feel relaxed, refreshed and deeply connected to nature.
After a good walk it’s time for good food. And here it is, tranquil dining heaven, The Beach Bar. This time-honored Irish pub has an outstanding atmosphere. One of those rare, old-style-pubs that feels truly authentic. It offers traditional food alongside a great selection of seafood. This unique, family run place, will instantly make you feel at home. Enjoy your well deserved meal or just a pint of Guiness either inside, in front of a cozy open fire, or outside in the fresh air with a stunning view and scent of the ocean, watching surfers hone their skills.
If you get inspired by them and decide to try surfing you don’t need to go far. Beach Bar Surf School is at your service. Operating year round since 2014 it offers group, private and semi-private lessons from beginners to more advanced. So don’t think twice and just try!
Make sure to include Aughris Head to your Sligo itinerary. It is definitely enjoyable and worth visiting.
