What do a legendary Irish queen, breathtaking views of Sligo Bay, and a mountain summit have in common? Just one remarkable hike that blends fantastic scenery with the legend about the warrior Queen of Konnacht.

The Queen Maeve trail is a true hidden gem of county Sligo. Beginning in a small seaside village of Strandhill it leads to the top of the Knocknarea mountain rewarding hikers with spectacular views of Sligo Bay, Rosses Point and even Slieve League Cliffs in county Donegal.

Classified as a moderate, the trail takes less than 2 hours to complete. Along the way there are several view points where you can stop to enjoy the scenery and take some stunning pictures. Part of the trail is a wooden boardwalk that goes through a mystical pine forest. The air here feels so fresh and pure that you’ll want to stop and breathe it in.

At the summit you will find a grave of a famous Queen Maeve, the legendary ruler, who led an army to Ulster to steal their prized brown Bull. Why did she need it? To match and surpass her husband’s wealth. Legend says that she was buried standing upright facing Ulster, watching over her land and still ready to fight.

Is it true? No one can say for sure. But it definitely remains a beautiful and thrilling legend. It is believed that adding a stone to the grave brings good luck. So feel free to take part and check. Just be sure not to take any stones from the grave with you if you don’t want to attract bad luck.
