Any holiday in Sligo is incomplete without trying surfing. And if you live here, not giving it a go should almost be considered a crime.
Surfing has always seemed like one of those things that can set your spirit free and give you a feeling of liberation. So, inspired by the classic “Point Break” movie, I decided to give it a try eventually.
Once you decide to do this, the next question is: Where do you start? That’s where surf schools come in. I chose Sligo Surf Experience, and it turned out to be a perfect choice.
I’ll be honest. Even though I was desperate to try it, I was absolutely terrified. But my love for adventure, the desire to challenge myself and an amazing instructor helped me overcome my fear.
From the moment I arrived at the surf school I immediately felt at ease and knew I was in good hands. There were only three of us in the group, and none of us had ever tried surfing before. We started with a short practice on the beach before heading to the water.
To be fair, it turned out to be harder than I expected. Getting up on the board while balancing on the moving water takes a lot of effort, determination, and a good sense of balance. At one point I was convinced I wouldn’t manage it, but thanks to the incredible instructor I finally stood up on the board and caught my first wave. No words can truly describe how I felt in that moment. It was something completely new and unbelievable.
I was once told never to try surfing because it’s addictive. And after experiencing it myself I can confidently say that’s absolutely true. So, if you are still thinking whether you should give it a go, my advice is simple: Just do it! And if you happen to be in Sligo, I can’t recommend Sligo Surf Experience enough, as choosing the right school is 90% of the success.
First of all, they provide all necessary equipment, including a wetsuit, surf boots and a surf board. You also don’t need to worry about where to leave your belongings while surfing as secure storage facilities are available. Sligo Surf Experience is based at the National Surf Centre in Strandhill giving you access to hot showers, changing rooms and bathrooms.
Surfing lessons are available daily giving you plenty of flexibility to fit a session into your plans. In addition to regular lessons, Sligo Surf Experience also offers surf camps for adults, teens and kids. All camps are personally supervised by Seamus Mc Goldrick, who is the most experienced surf school manager in Strandhill and three-times Irish bodyboarding champion.
