Your Perfect Autumn Sligo Escape

Your Perfect Autumn Sligo Escape

- Posted on: 06/10/2026 -

Autumn is the perfect season to visit Sligo, when the town takes on a completely different atmosphere from summer. This is the time to experience dramatic Atlantic weather with huge ocean waves crashing against the cliffs, showing their true strengths and spirit.

Autumn mornings become even more spectacular with mountains disappearing beneath gray skies and morning fog, while the gleam of the sunlight breaks through the clouds, leaving its golden trace on the yellow leaves.

Some trees are still green, while others have already turned red & gold…

Autumn is a time of slow walks, comfy cafes, warm gatherings and creating beautiful memories. With much fewer crowds than in summer, the town becomes cozier and quieter giving visitors a chance to see and experience its most authentic.

How would the perfect autumn Sligo escape look? It starts on Friday afternoon with check-in at Sligo Park Hotel, followed by a special autumn cocktail in the Jack B’s bar and delicious dinner from our new autumn menu.

After dinner it’s time to head into Sligo Town, soak up its cosy evening atmosphere and enjoy a pint in one of the local pubs.

Saturday starts with a slow breakfast in the Hazelwood restaurant. Full Irish breakfast followed by a cup of good coffee and a crunchy croissant is the best way to start the day. After a good breakfast it’s time to enjoy a long walk in the Hazelwood forest. Just 10 minutes drive from Sligo Park Hotel and you will find yourself immersed in the peaceful and cozy atmosphere of these ancient woodlands (pictures below of Hazelwood Forest).

Beautiful Lough Gill lake, mature trees, many of which are more than 250 years old, Dartry Mountains in the background and paths covered with the golden leaves create a perfect setting to slow down and reconnect with nature. The air is already a little bit chilly, but wonderfully fresh. You breathe it in, walk slower and just enjoy the moment. Now your mind is totally clear and your body is relaxed and you are ready for the rest of your Sligo adventure.

Encouraged by the walk, why not continue exploring Sligo and visit one of its most famous historical sites - Sligo Abbey. Since it was founded in the 13th century The Abbey has witnessed centuries of dramatic events and who knows how many secrets are kept by its stone walls. One of those secrets is even connected to Dracula. Intrigued? Then don’t skip Sligo Abbey and maybe it will reveal this secret to you. As you are back to the town it is the perfect time to stop for lunch at one of the local cafes. Warm up with a bowl of hot homemade soup and a good piece of local meat.

Once lunch is finished it’s time to explore one of the newest Sligo attractions - Lough Gill Brewhall & Guests Experience. Step inside and discover the history of brewing in Sligo while  following the journey from grain to glass during the guided brewery tour and tasting. What a wonderful way to spend an autumn afternoon! For tours availability and tickets, please, visit the official website: https://loughgillbrewery.com/products/guided-brewery-tour-tasting

Finish this day with one of the most beautiful experiences: fantastic sunset on Strandhill beach and dinner in one of the coastal cafes.

Sunday starts with a slow breakfast, served until 11am, giving you plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed morning before another day of exploring Sligo. And then the choice is yours: Step back in time at Parke’s castle and enjoy a scenic boat trip on Lough Gill lake, discovering its spectacular islands. Discover Sligo farming traditions at Atlantic Sheepdogs farm and take pleasure in watching an entertaining sheep dogs demonstration. Embrace the wild Atlantic and explore breathtaking Gleniff Horseshoe and Mullaghmore Head. Regardless of what you choose, you will not be disappointed as these places will definitely leave a trace in your heart and help you create unbelievable memories.
